My name is Jacob and I'm a friend of Hyman. He invited me to start blogging on his account for two reasons: 1, he hasn't been blogging himself; and 2, I had expressed and interest in doing it. So, since he had a blog platform all set up, here we go.
A bit about myself. I live in a Mediterranean country, on the coast, but I wasn't born here. I live here with my wife and son. They both speak the local language rather well, which I do not. My limited ability to communicate with natives limits me. It's true that I'm often so busy with work that I would have neither time to learn this language nor use it. But there have been times when I haven't been busy and when a working knowledge of this tongue would have enhanced my experience here.
Lately, we have talked about moving to a different city, the capital of our province. In addition to being the provincial seat of government, it's also home to a major university. As you might expect, the population is educated and prosperous, secure and civilized. Broad in their interests and probably good for conversation. So, I would do even better there if I learn this tongue. So I'll set about doing so and let you know what happens.
